Murata Launches World’s Smallest RF Coaxial Connectors, Saving 40% PCB Space

Murata Introduces World’s Smallest RF Coaxial Connectors, Reducing PCB Space by Up to 60%

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd, a global leader in electronic components and solutions, has commenced mass production of its new SWL series MM8330-2600RJ5 and MM8330-2600RK20 RF/microwave coaxial connectors with a switch. Measuring just 1.0 mm × 1.0 mm × 0.55 mm, the connectors are the world’s smallest of their kind, according to Murata’s research as of October 28, 2026.

Designed to meet the growing demand for compact electronic devices, the SWL series reduces PCB mounting area by approximately 40% compared with Murata’s previous SWJ series. When used with dedicated probes, the connectors can reduce the overall PCB footprint required for testing, including the keep-out area, by approximately 60%.

The new connectors address a key challenge in modern electronics design: fitting more components and advanced functionality into increasingly compact printed circuit boards (PCBs). As smartphones, wearable devices, and other wireless products become more sophisticated, manufacturers must optimize available board space without compromising performance or reliability.

Reducing Space Requirements for RF Measurement

Radio frequency (RF) testing is an essential part of evaluating wireless circuits and ensuring their performance. However, conventional RF test connectors require space not only for the connector itself but also for surrounding clearance that allows probes to access the test point during circuit measurements.

These additional space requirements can limit component placement and make it more difficult for manufacturers to design smaller, more densely integrated electronic devices.

Murata’s SWL series addresses these challenges through a proprietary structure that combines the company’s RF engineering and mechanical design technologies. This approach enables substantial miniaturization while maintaining low RF transmission loss and mechanical robustness.

Measuring just 1.0 mm × 1.0 mm × 0.55 mm, the new connectors are significantly smaller than Murata’s previous SWJ series, which measures 1.4 mm × 1.2 mm × 0.65 mm. The reduced dimensions provide greater flexibility for PCB layout and allow designers to make more efficient use of limited board space.

The SWL series also helps minimize the clearance needed around measurement points when paired with dedicated automatic or manual probes. By reducing the space required for both the connector and probe access, the solution can contribute to more compact PCB designs and improved component placement flexibility.

Murata plans to begin mass production of the dedicated probes in December 2026, further supporting the adoption of the new connector series in RF measurement applications.

Supporting High-Frequency Applications up to 15 GHz

Despite their compact size, the SWL series connectors are designed to support high-frequency testing requirements. They operate across a frequency range from DC to 15 GHz and feature a nominal impedance of 50 ohms, making them suitable for a variety of RF and microwave circuit measurement applications.

These specifications enable engineers to conduct measurements across a broad range of frequencies while benefiting from a smaller connector footprint. The combination of compact dimensions, low transmission loss, and mechanical strength is intended to support the development and testing of increasingly advanced wireless electronics.

The SWL series is available in two packaging configurations to accommodate different production and handling requirements.

The MM8330-2600RJ5 is supplied on reels containing 5,000 pieces, while the MM8330-2600RK20 is supplied on reels containing 20,000 pieces. These options provide flexibility for manufacturers with different production volumes and assembly requirements.

By offering multiple packaging choices, Murata aims to support efficient component handling and integration into electronic manufacturing processes.

Enabling More Compact and High-Performance Devices

The launch of the SWL series reflects Murata’s continued efforts to develop smaller electronic components that help manufacturers overcome space constraints in modern product design.

As consumer electronics incorporate more wireless capabilities, designers face increasing pressure to balance compact dimensions with reliable performance, efficient testing, and high component density. Smaller RF connectors can help address these requirements by freeing up valuable PCB space for other components and functions.

For smartphones and wearable devices, where compact layouts are particularly important, improvements in component size can provide manufacturers with greater design flexibility. Reducing the area required for RF measurement can also simplify board layout decisions and support more efficient use of available space.

Murata plans to continue developing miniaturized electronic components and solutions that enable more effective PCB space utilization. Through ongoing advances in materials, component engineering, and manufacturing technologies, the company aims to support the development of smaller, more capable, and higher-performance electronic products.

The introduction of the SWL series represents another step toward meeting the evolving needs of the wireless electronics industry, where compact designs and reliable high-frequency performance remain important priorities.
