Sony to Showcase Cutting-Edge Technology at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25
As an official partner of the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 (WCH Tokyo 25), taking place at Japan National Stadium from September 13 to 21, Sony Corporation (“Sony”) will enhance the viewing experience for global audiences by harnessing the power of its innovative technologies.
Throughout the championships, Sony’s advanced lineup—including Alpha™ mirrorless cameras, G Master™ interchangeable lenses, portable high-speed data transmitters, system cameras, and broadcasting solutions—will be used in news coverage and event production. These tools enable photographers, videographers, and broadcasters to capture athletes’ performances with speed, precision, and creativity, sharing the excitement of the games with audiences worldwide.
Key Initiatives
World Athletics Media Academy
As a partner of the World Athletics Media Academy, Sony will support a workshop for eleven aspiring sports photographers from around the globe. Guided by world-class professionals, participants will gain hands-on shooting experience on the competition track, sharpening their skills in storytelling and sports coverage. This initiative aims to inspire creativity and foster the next generation of sports journalists.
Officiating Support
Sony group company Hawk-Eye Innovations will provide its renowned video replay technology across all track and field events. With multiple cameras positioned throughout the stadium, Hawk-Eye will support officials in ensuring fair play and accurate decisions. When disqualifications occur, the same footage and explanatory graphics will be shared with broadcasters, helping viewers better understand the rulings.
Professional Photographer Support
Sony will operate a Camera Service Booth inside the Media Centre, offering on-site support to accredited photographers. With approximately 150 cameras and 600 lenses available, Sony’s engineers and creator support team will work directly with professionals to ensure smooth operation. The booth also provides valuable opportunities for Sony to collect feedback that may shape future product development.
Social Contribution Activities
In partnership with Project KIBO, a children’s support initiative founded by former Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai, Sony will invite children and their guardians to the stadium. Guests will enjoy the competitions, explore Sony’s booth, take part in a running workshop on the track, and participate in a photography experience with Alpha cameras under the guidance of a professional photographer.
Public Exhibitions and Experiences
From September 5 to 22, Sony Store Ginza will host “WORLD ATHLETICS MOMENTS: MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE”, featuring photos from WCH Tokyo 25 and an interactive motion-tracking installation powered by Hawk-Eye technology. Additionally, an on-site booth will be set up near Gate B of the Japan National Stadium, where visitors can test the latest Alpha cameras and E-mount lenses.
