Renesas Opens Beijing AI & Robotics Lab

Renesas Opens Physical AI & Robotics Lab in Beijing to Accelerate Next-Generation Robotics

Renesas Electronics Corporation, a leading global provider of advanced semiconductor solutions, has officially opened its new Physical AI & Robotics Lab in Beijing, China. The dedicated facility is designed to help customers demonstrate, validate and co-develop next-generation robotic systems while supporting the practical implementation of Renesas’ physical AI strategy—from early proof-of-concept projects to large-scale commercial deployment.

The launch reflects Renesas’ growing focus on physical AI, an emerging area in which artificial intelligence extends beyond software and digital environments to interact directly with the physical world. The company established its Physical AI Division on July 1, 2026, highlighting the technology as an important long-term growth opportunity.

Advancing Physical AI and Robotics

Physical AI refers to intelligent systems capable of sensing their surroundings, making decisions and taking physical actions in real time. Unlike conventional AI applications that primarily operate within digital environments, physical AI systems must respond reliably to changing real-world conditions while maintaining safety, accuracy and predictable behavior.

Robotics is one of the most prominent applications of physical AI. Humanoid robots, in particular, require the coordinated operation of numerous technologies, including embedded processors, sensors, motors, power-management systems, connectivity, software and artificial intelligence. Bringing these technologies together into a reliable and scalable system presents significant engineering challenges.

Renesas’ new Beijing laboratory is intended to address these challenges by providing an environment where customers and technology partners can test complete robotic systems and accelerate development. Rather than serving solely as a product demonstration center, the facility will support system validation, engineering collaboration and joint development.

Supporting Customers From Concept to Deployment

The Physical AI & Robotics Lab brings together a broad range of technologies required to develop advanced robotic platforms. These include hardware, software, AI modeling, motion control, sensing, power management and system-level verification.

By combining these capabilities in one location, Renesas aims to help customers move more efficiently from initial concepts and prototypes to validated products and eventual mass deployment. The laboratory will also serve as a platform connecting customer requirements with Renesas technologies, ecosystem partners and other resources.

Ivo Marocco, Vice President and Head of UX at Renesas, highlighted the growing complexity of humanoid robots and the importance of integrating hardware and software into a complete system.

According to Marocco, Renesas currently has the technology to address approximately 30% of the bill of materials (BOM) for a typical humanoid robot. The company believes it can potentially increase this coverage to around 70% by leveraging its expertise in control, power management, sensing, artificial intelligence, software and ecosystem solutions.

The Beijing facility is expected to play an important role in achieving this goal by allowing customers to evaluate complete solutions rather than individual semiconductor components. This system-level approach can help shorten development cycles, identify engineering challenges earlier and accelerate the transition from prototypes to production-ready robotic systems.

Strengthening Renesas’ Presence in China

China is one of the world’s most important markets for robotics, supported by a large customer base, an established manufacturing ecosystem, a strong supply chain and significant investment in automation and intelligent technologies.

Yvonne Liu, Vice President and President of Renesas China, emphasized the importance of the Chinese market to the company’s physical AI strategy. She noted that China continues to play a leading role in both robotics innovation and adoption.

Through the new Beijing lab, Renesas plans to work closely with customers, startups, universities and ecosystem partners. This collaborative approach is expected to help translate emerging physical AI technologies into practical engineering solutions.

The facility will therefore serve not only as a technology center but also as a collaboration hub where different participants in the robotics ecosystem can work together on new applications and system architectures.

Comprehensive Technology Portfolio

Renesas believes its broad semiconductor portfolio provides a strong foundation for supporting physical AI and humanoid robotics. The company offers technologies covering several critical areas of robotic systems, including processing, motion and motor control, sensing, actuation and power management.

A modern humanoid robot may require numerous interconnected control and sensing systems to coordinate movement, interpret its environment and respond appropriately. Reliable power management is also essential because robotic platforms must operate efficiently while supporting increasingly sophisticated computing and mechanical functions.

Renesas brings decades of experience in automotive and industrial applications to these challenges. Its expertise in areas such as functional safety, embedded processing, edge AI and power technologies can help robotics developers create systems that are not only intelligent but also reliable and scalable.

The company is also integrating software and development capabilities into its robotics strategy. Renesas 365, its cloud-based electronics development platform, is intended to support engineers throughout the electronics development process and complement the company’s semiconductor technologies.

Building the Future of Robotics

The opening of the Beijing Physical AI & Robotics Lab represents another step in Renesas’ strategy to expand its role in the rapidly developing physical AI market. As robotics evolves from specialized industrial machines toward more adaptable and intelligent platforms, developers increasingly need complete technology solutions rather than individual components.

Humanoid robots are expected to be an important driver of this transition. Their ability to interact with people and operate in environments designed for humans creates opportunities across manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, services and other industries. However, achieving reliable real-world performance requires close integration between artificial intelligence, sensors, processors, motors, power systems and software.

Renesas’ new laboratory is designed to provide that integrated development environment. By enabling customers to demonstrate, test and jointly develop complete robotic systems, the company aims to reduce engineering complexity and speed up innovation.

The facility also reinforces Renesas’ broader commitment to China as a strategic market for technology development and collaboration. By working directly with local customers, startups, universities and ecosystem partners, Renesas can better understand emerging requirements and help turn new physical AI concepts into deployable solutions.

Overall, the Beijing lab strengthens Renesas’ position in the growing physical AI and robotics ecosystem. With its combination of semiconductor expertise, software capabilities, system-level engineering and collaborative development, the company aims to help customers accelerate the creation of safer, smarter and more scalable robotic systems.

As physical AI continues to evolve, facilities such as Renesas’ new Beijing laboratory could become increasingly important in bridging the gap between artificial intelligence research and real-world robotic applications. The company’s goal is to support customers throughout this journey—from early experimentation and proof of concept to fully engineered products and large-scale deployment.
