Powering the Future: How Kempower and Batenburg Techniek Are Supporting Renewi’s Electric Waste Fleet
In June 2025, Kempower partnered with Dutch system integrator Batenburg Techniek to deliver direct current (DC) charging systems to support the electrification of Renewi’s commercial vehicle fleet. This collaboration marked the launch of the first of several new electric vehicle (EV) charging depots that Renewi plans to open over the coming years.
Renewi is a leading European waste-to-product company with operations primarily in the Benelux region, along with other European countries including France and Portugal. As part of its ambitious sustainability goals, Renewi is heavily investing in electric mobility. By owning and operating its own dedicated charging infrastructure, Renewi is taking a proactive step in ensuring that its growing fleet of electric trucks has the support it needs to perform reliably and efficiently—while significantly reducing environmental impact.
Sustainability at the Heart of Growth
At its core, Renewi’s business is about transforming waste into value. The company helps organizations manage their waste streams more sustainably and economically by collecting, sorting, and processing millions of tonnes of materials annually for reuse in new products. This circular approach to waste management benefits both the environment and the economy.
But Renewi is not only helping others improve sustainability—it’s also focused on reducing its own environmental footprint. A key pillar of that internal strategy is the electrification of its vehicle fleet. Starting in 2020 with a single electric Volvo FE 6X2V, the company has accelerated its transition to electric mobility in recent years. In the coming months alone, more than 30 new electric trucks will join its growing zero-emission fleet.
These trucks are critical to Renewi’s mission. They are used for collecting waste from a variety of commercial and residential sources, then transporting that waste to processing centers where it is transformed into valuable secondary raw materials. With more trucks in service, having access to reliable and scalable charging infrastructure is essential.
Building Smart Charging Infrastructure for a Demanding Fleet
In 2024, Renewi began collaborating with Kempower to develop the first charging depots for its electric trucks. Two key locations—in Amsterdam and Wateringen, The Hague—were selected as pilot sites. Together, they now feature a total of 30 Kempower Satellite charging dispensers.
The Wateringen site houses 18 charging plugs, while the Amsterdam depot includes 12. These systems are equipped with dynamic power sharing, which intelligently distributes available power across multiple charging points. This ensures efficient energy use and reduces idle time, helping keep the trucks on the road and minimizing electricity costs.
The charging depots are specifically tailored to suit Renewi’s operational patterns. Most trucks return to the depot at the end of the workday and charge overnight. Using Kempower’s ChargEye platform—a cloud-based charging management system—Renewi can schedule and optimize these overnight sessions. This not only ensures that vehicles are fully charged and ready by morning but also takes advantage of lower nighttime electricity rates. In fact, by aligning charging schedules with grid availability and fleet needs, ChargEye can help Renewi reduce energy costs by up to 60%.
ChargEye also offers real-time monitoring and diagnostics capabilities, allowing Renewi’s fleet managers to track charging progress, address faults, and optimize station performance remotely. Additionally, Kempower chargers boast exceptional reliability, with an average uptime of 99%. This is largely thanks to the chargers’ modular design: if one module encounters a failure, the rest of the system continues operating uninterrupted.
Scaling Up for the Future
Renewi is preparing to expand its charging infrastructure with five more depot locations already in the planning stages. New sites are expected to launch in Amersfoort, Nieuwegein, Rotterdam, and Puurs, Belgium, among others.
Kempower’s chargers are well-suited to support this rapid expansion. Their modular construction allows more units to be added easily as the fleet grows, and their compact footprint means minimal disruption to depot layouts. This flexibility is critical for adapting to the evolving needs of a large-scale electric fleet.
