[Next-Generation Communications Leadership Interview ③] Shaping Tomorrow’s Networks With AI-RAN

As global competition intensifies with the rollout of 5G and preparations for 6G, artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a defining force in next-generation communications. In particular, AI-based radio access network (AI-RAN) technology — which brings AI directly into base stations — stands out as a breakthrough for driving efficiency, intelligence, and adaptability in mobile networks.

Samsung Electronics is at the forefront of this transformation, embedding AI across communications systems while leading technology development and standardization. In part three of its 6G research series, Samsung Newsroom spoke with Charlie Zhang, Senior Vice President of the 6G Research Team, to explore how AI-RAN is reshaping network architecture and preparing the foundation for the 6G era.

Reimagining 6G for a Dynamic Future

User expectations are shifting. Instead of raw performance metrics like data rates or latency, people now value reliable connectivity, energy efficiency, and longer battery life.

To address this, Samsung has been conducting 6G research since 2020. In February 2025, the company published its AI-Native & Sustainable Communication white paper, outlining four strategic pillars for 6G: AI-Native, Sustainable Networks, Ubiquitous Coverage, and Secure & Resilient Networks.

“AI is not only essential for 5G but will be the cornerstone of 6G,” Zhang said. “Deeply embedding AI from the design stage will enable autonomous, intelligent networks — this is what we call AI-Native.”

How AI-RAN Transforms Network Architecture

The evolution toward 6G requires a fundamental rethinking of radio access networks (RANs), the backbone of mobile communications.

  • Traditional RAN: Built on dedicated hardware, but limited in capacity, efficiency, and flexibility.
  • Virtualized RAN (vRAN): Introduced software-based network functions, running on general-purpose servers for scalability, flexibility, and cost savings. Samsung has already achieved large-scale vRAN deployments worldwide.
  • AI-RAN: The next leap, embedding AI into RAN to enable networks that learn, predict, and optimize in real time.

With AI-RAN, networks can:

  • Anticipate user movement and adapt transmission methods.
  • Optimize signal processing to reduce latency.
  • Analyze usage patterns to allocate resources more efficiently, delivering personalized user experiences while cutting energy consumption.
Research and Proven Potential

Samsung has validated AI-RAN technologies through Proofs of Concept (PoC), including demonstrations at MWC 2025. Key breakthroughs include:

  • AI-based channel estimation: Accurately predicts channel conditions in noisy environments, boosting efficiency and performance.
  • Enhanced signal processing: AI-driven modem capabilities enable more precise modulation and demodulation for higher throughput and lower latency.
  • System automation: Dynamically adjusts coding, modulation, and resource allocation to maintain quality, mitigate failures, and reduce operational complexity.

“These advancements enhance network performance, stability, and user satisfaction — paving the way for next-generation communications,” Zhang emphasized.

Driving Progress Through Global Collaboration

The success of AI-RAN depends on international cooperation in both research and standardization. Samsung is a founding member of the AI-RAN Alliance, holding leadership roles as vice chair of the board and chair of the AI-on-RAN Working Group.

“Global collaboration accelerates adoption by sharing expertise and driving industry standards,” Zhang said. “By working together, we can unlock AI-RAN’s full potential and prepare the industry for 6G.”

AI-RAN is more than an enhancement to today’s networks — it is the foundation for 6G. With ongoing research, proven concepts, and global collaboration, Samsung is helping shape an intelligent, efficient, and sustainable communications future.
