Sony Named to CDP Climate Change A List for the Tenth Time
Sony Group Corporation (Sony) has once again earned a place on CDP’s prestigious Climate Change A List, the organization’s highest performance ranking, recognizing global leadership in addressing climate change. This marks the fifth consecutive year and the tenth overall time that Sony has been included on the A List for climate change.
Guided by the belief that long-term business success depends on a healthy global environment, Sony has established Road to Zero, a comprehensive long-term environmental plan aimed at achieving a zero environmental footprint across the entire Sony Group by 2050. Under this initiative, Sony promotes sustainability efforts across four key areas: climate change, resource efficiency, chemical substance management, and biodiversity conservation.
Strengthened Climate Targets and Science-Based Commitments
As climate-related risks become increasingly urgent, Sony has accelerated its climate action commitments. The company has moved its net-zero greenhouse gas emissions target across its entire value chain—including Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions—from 2050 to 2040. In addition, Sony advanced its goal of using 100% renewable electricity at its own sites from 2040 to 2030. These ambitious targets have been validated and approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), underscoring Sony’s alignment with climate science.
Expanding Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Efforts
To achieve its climate goals, Sony is implementing a wide range of energy conservation measures at manufacturing sites and offices worldwide. These efforts include installing solar power generation systems, expanding existing renewable energy facilities, purchasing renewable electricity from utilities, and utilizing renewable energy certificates.
As a result of these initiatives, Sony achieved its Green Management 2025 target of sourcing 35% or more of its energy from renewable sources two years ahead of schedule, in fiscal year 2023. Recent investments include the installation and expansion of solar power facilities in Thailand, the United States, and Japan, alongside increased use of renewable energy certificates. Consequently, Sony’s global renewable energy usage rate reached 40.1% in fiscal year 2024.
Reducing Emissions Across Products and the Supply Chain
Sony is also working to reduce energy consumption across its product portfolio by setting specific annual efficiency targets for each product category. Beyond its own operations, the company is actively addressing greenhouse gas emissions throughout its supply chain.
Through its Partner Eco Challenge Program, Sony collaborates closely with materials and parts suppliers by visiting production sites and sharing expertise on energy-saving practices. Initially implemented in Japan, the program expanded to supplier factories in China in fiscal year 2023 and further extended to Thailand in fiscal year 2024.
Commitment to a Sustainable Future
As Sony continues its journey toward achieving a zero environmental footprint, the company remains committed to reducing its environmental impact while delivering environmentally conscious products and services. Through sustained climate action and responsible business practices, Sony aims to contribute to the creation of a more sustainable society and a healthier global environment.
