T-Mobile and Jio Deliver World-First 5G Standalone Roaming
T-Mobile and Jio have announced a major milestone in the evolution of global wireless connectivity, completing what the companies describe as the world’s first 5G Standalone (SA) roaming connection. The achievement was enabled through interoperability with Syniverse and demonstrates the potential for next-generation 5G networks to provide seamless connectivity across international borders.
The milestone marks an important development in the evolution of 5G roaming. Unlike earlier generations of mobile technology that rely on existing network infrastructure and combinations of technologies, 5G Standalone operates on a dedicated 5G core network. This architecture is designed to deliver greater network performance, lower latency and enhanced capabilities for advanced applications.
Through the successful interoperability between T-Mobile and Jio’s 5G SA networks, T-Mobile customers traveling internationally can experience 5G Standalone roaming. The companies say the achievement establishes a new benchmark for international 5G connectivity and demonstrates how independently operated networks can work together to deliver a more consistent roaming experience.
“This is a monumental step for global wireless, and T-Mobile is proud to lead it,” said Ankur Kapoor, Chief Network Officer at T-Mobile. “We started this journey back in 2020, laying the groundwork for a 5G Standalone future — and today, we’re continuing that leadership with Jio India as a partner on a global stage.”
According to T-Mobile, the goal is to make international connectivity increasingly seamless for customers. As travelers move between countries, the underlying network technology can maintain the capabilities associated with 5G Standalone rather than relying on older roaming architectures.
Advancing the Global 5G Roaming Experience
The successful connection between T-Mobile and Jio demonstrates how 5G SA can extend beyond individual national networks. For consumers, 5G Standalone roaming is designed to support faster data speeds, lower latency and more consistent connectivity when traveling internationally.
These capabilities can be particularly relevant for applications that depend on real-time communication and high-performance network connections. Examples include cloud-based applications, connected devices, immersive digital experiences, video services and other emerging technologies.
T-Mobile highlighted everyday applications as well as business use cases that could benefit from the development.
“Leave one country, land in another, and your 5G experience is just as seamless — whether you’re streaming, sharing travel reels or running business apps,” Kapoor said. “That’s the breakthrough power of this technology.”
The companies believe that interoperability between 5G SA networks could eventually support more sophisticated services as operators expand their standalone network capabilities.
For enterprises, the development could be particularly relevant as organizations increasingly rely on connected devices, cloud applications and mobile workforces operating across multiple countries. Reliable, low-latency connectivity can be important for applications involving real-time data exchange, automation and connected infrastructure.
Collaboration Between T-Mobile and Jio
Jio, one of India’s major telecommunications operators, has been expanding its 5G Standalone capabilities as part of its broader network strategy. T-Mobile has also been investing in its standalone 5G architecture and technologies.
The successful roaming connection between the two networks represents a step toward greater interoperability among standalone 5G deployments around the world.
“This is a transformational milestone and far more than just roaming — it’s about what becomes possible when two leading 5G Standalone networks work together,” said Mark Yarkosky, Head of International Network, Partnership and Services at Jio.
Yarkosky said the collaboration could create opportunities for new consumer and enterprise services by combining the capabilities of independent 5G SA networks.
“T-Mobile and Jio are laying the foundation for a new generation of cross-network capabilities and services, from differentiated consumer and enterprise experiences to AI-enabled services, leveraging the unique capabilities of 5G Standalone,” he said.
The companies said the broader vision is to create a more interoperable global 5G environment where networks can work together to support new applications and services.

Syniverse Enables Network Interoperability
The milestone was enabled through Syniverse, whose connectivity platform provides the infrastructure needed to facilitate secure interconnection between mobile networks.
As 5G Standalone networks become more widespread, interoperability between operators is increasingly important. Roaming requires multiple networks to exchange authentication, signaling and other information securely while maintaining a reliable connection for the end user.
Syniverse’s platform supports these interconnections and helps operators test, validate and deploy 5G SA roaming capabilities.
“Syniverse is proud to help enable this industry-first 5G Standalone roaming milestone, demonstrating how secure interworking and advanced mediation can make next-generation roaming commercially viable at a global level,” said John Wick, Chief Product Officer of Syniverse.
Wick noted that Syniverse’s work builds on long-standing relationships across the mobile communications industry and includes its Security Edge Protection Proxy, or SEPP, capabilities. SEPP is an important component of 5G network security and helps protect signaling traffic exchanged between different operator networks.
“Built on long-standing partnerships across the mobile ecosystem, our home-grown SEPP capabilities and proven platform help operators test, navigate, and launch 5G SA roaming with confidence,” Wick said.
He added that Syniverse can support operators throughout the process, from initial validation and testing through production deployment as additional 5G-ready networks join the ecosystem.
Building the Foundation for Future 5G Services
The T-Mobile-Jio achievement highlights the broader transition from early 5G deployments toward more advanced standalone architectures.
5G Standalone is designed to unlock capabilities that extend beyond faster smartphone connectivity. Its architecture can support technologies such as massive IoT deployments, low-latency communications, network slicing and other advanced enterprise applications.
As operators develop compatible networks and roaming frameworks, these capabilities could become increasingly accessible across borders.
For consumers, the immediate benefit is the potential for a more consistent high-performance mobile experience while traveling internationally. For businesses, greater interoperability could support cross-border applications that depend on reliable mobile connectivity.
T-Mobile and Jio’s collaboration demonstrates how cooperation between operators, technology providers and connectivity platforms can help address the technical requirements associated with global 5G roaming.
The companies view the development as part of a larger effort to build a future where next-generation connectivity is not constrained by national borders.
The achievement also underscores the importance of common technical standards and secure network interoperability as 5G continues to evolve. As more operators transition to standalone networks, the ability to establish secure and reliable connections between different networks will become increasingly important for international roaming.
T-Mobile said the collaboration represents another step in its efforts to advance connectivity and develop new services powered by its 5G network.
