TNS Appoints Michael Johnson to Lead Global Payments Business

Transaction Network Services (TNS), a global provider of managed network and payment solutions, has appointed Michael Johnson as Global Managing Director of its Payments Market business. In his new role, Johnson will be responsible for shaping the company’s global payments strategy, accelerating growth, and strengthening relationships with customers and partners across international markets.

The appointment comes as the payments industry continues to evolve rapidly, driven by the increasing demand for secure, reliable, scalable, and flexible payment infrastructure. As businesses expand their digital operations and consumers expect faster and more seamless transactions, payment providers are facing growing pressure to deliver resilient technology while managing increasingly complex ecosystems.

Johnson will lead TNS’s global Payments Market business across its broad portfolio of payment products and services. He will work closely with regional leadership teams and TNS’s corporate management to identify growth opportunities, strengthen the company’s market position, and deliver solutions that address the changing requirements of merchants, financial institutions, payment providers, and other organizations.

His appointment highlights TNS’s continued investment in its payments and connectivity capabilities and reinforces the company’s goal of helping customers simplify increasingly complex transaction environments.

Extensive Experience with TNS

Johnson brings significant experience within TNS and the wider payments and telecommunications industries. He joined TNS in 2017 as Vice President of APAC Operations, where he was responsible for network operations across the Asia-Pacific region.

In 2018, he was promoted to Managing Director for Asia Pacific Payments, taking on broader responsibility for TNS’s payments activities across the region. Following TNS’s acquisition of ADVAM, Johnson also assumed responsibility for the ADVAM suite of payment solutions.

Through these roles, Johnson developed extensive knowledge of TNS’s payment and connectivity products, customers, employees, and regional operations. His experience across different areas of the business positions him to take on a global leadership role and drive greater collaboration across TNS’s international operations.

“I’m honored to take on this global role at such an important time for both TNS and the payments industry,” said Michael Johnson, Global Managing Director, TNS Payments Market.

Johnson emphasized that payment ecosystems are becoming increasingly complex and that businesses need trusted technology partners capable of delivering secure and resilient infrastructure.

According to Johnson, TNS is well positioned to help organizations navigate these changes by providing scalable payment and connectivity solutions that support mission-critical commerce. He also highlighted his focus on working with TNS’s global teams to help customers innovate, expand into new markets, and operate with greater confidence.

A Veteran of the Payments Industry

Before joining TNS, Johnson spent 15 years with First Data Australia and New Zealand, where he progressed to the position of Vice President of Global Service Delivery. His career also includes experience as CEO of PAX Technology Australia, giving him broad exposure to payment technology, service delivery, and the wider financial technology ecosystem.

Johnson began his professional career as a Project Manager at Centrica Telecommunications in London before moving to Sydney in 2002. Originally from New Zealand, he has developed extensive international experience throughout his career, particularly across the telecommunications and payments sectors.

His background in operations, service delivery, payment technology, and regional management provides a strong foundation for his new global responsibilities at TNS.

Driving the Next Stage of Payments Growth

TNS CEO Mike Keegan said Johnson’s deep understanding of the company’s payments and connectivity portfolio will be an important advantage as TNS pursues new opportunities in the global payments market.

“Michael’s knowledge of TNS’s payments and connectivity products, services and customers, as well as his strong relationships with TNS employees across all groups and regions, will ensure that we remain focused on delivering on the significant opportunities we have in our Payments Market business,” Keegan said.

Under Johnson’s leadership, TNS will continue focusing on opportunities created by the growing demand for digital payments, secure connectivity, and integrated transaction infrastructure.

Payment environments have become increasingly fragmented, with businesses often relying on multiple providers and technology platforms to manage connectivity, payment acceptance, transaction processing, and security. This fragmentation can increase operational complexity and make it more difficult for organizations to maintain consistent customer experiences.

TNS aims to address these challenges by providing managed services through a single technology partner. Its portfolio is designed to help customers simplify payment acceptance and connectivity while improving operational resilience.

Supporting Businesses Around the World

Founded in the United States in 1990, TNS has grown into a global provider of payment and network infrastructure. The company now supports more than 2,800 organizations across more than 50 countries.

Its customer base includes merchants, financial institutions, payment service providers, and self-service operators. These organizations rely on TNS to help manage payment acceptance, transaction processing, network connectivity, and other critical infrastructure.

The company’s solutions are designed to reduce the complexity associated with fragmented payment environments while helping customers improve reliability and deliver smoother payment experiences.

For merchants, this can include support for in-store and unattended payment environments. Financial institutions and payment providers can use TNS technology to support transaction processing and secure connectivity, while self-service operators can rely on the company’s infrastructure to enable dependable payment experiences across automated environments.

Expanding Payment and Connectivity Capabilities

TNS offers a broad portfolio that spans payment terminals, online payment solutions, global network connectivity, and payment processing.

The company has also developed cloud-native payment orchestration capabilities designed to help businesses manage different payment services through a more integrated infrastructure.

This approach is increasingly relevant as organizations seek to support multiple payment methods, digital channels, geographic markets, and customer experiences without having to manage separate infrastructure providers for every requirement.

By combining payment and connectivity services, TNS aims to provide customers with a more streamlined way to manage their transaction environments.

The company’s Infrastructure-as-a-Service model further supports this strategy by allowing organizations to access managed infrastructure and services without taking on the complexity of operating all of the underlying systems themselves.

Focus on Security and Resilience

Security and reliability remain central to the payments industry, particularly as transaction volumes continue to increase and digital commerce becomes more dependent on always-available infrastructure.

Payment interruptions can have immediate consequences for businesses and customers, making network resilience and dependable transaction processing essential.

It positions its managed services as a way for organizations to strengthen resilience while reducing the operational burden associated with managing complex payment and connectivity environments.

Johnson’s appointment is expected to support this strategy by bringing together It’s regional expertise and global payment capabilities under a unified leadership structure.

Looking Ahead

The appointment of Michael Johnson represents an important leadership move for It as the company seeks to expand its global Payments Market business.

With extensive experience across TNS, payment technology, telecommunications, and service delivery, Johnson brings a combination of operational knowledge and industry expertise to the role. His understanding of It’s customers, products, employees, and regional markets is expected to help the company identify new opportunities while maintaining a strong focus on customer needs.

As payment ecosystems continue to evolve, businesses will increasingly require infrastructure that combines security, scalability, resilience, and flexibility. It aims to meet these requirements by providing integrated payment and connectivity services through a single managed platform.

With Johnson leading the global Payments Market business, It will continue working to simplify payment infrastructure for organizations around the world while supporting the growth of digital commerce and next-generation payment experiences.
