Toshiba Introduces Compact 80V eFuse IC for 48V Industrial Power Systems
Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation has expanded its electronic fuse (eFuse) IC portfolio with the launch of the TCKE1401NM, an 80V-rated device designed to provide comprehensive protection for power lines in industrial and consumer equipment. Shipments of the new product have begun.
The new eFuse IC is designed to address the growing need for reliable power protection as 48V power systems become increasingly common in servers, networking equipment, factory automation systems, robots and other high-power electronic platforms. Toshiba says the device combines multiple protection functions in a compact package, helping equipment manufacturers improve safety while reducing printed circuit board (PCB) space.
Designed for 48V and Other High-Voltage Systems
As modern electronic equipment demands higher output power and greater efficiency, 48V power architectures are gaining adoption across industrial applications. Compared with lower-voltage systems, 48V designs can help deliver higher power while managing current levels more efficiently. However, these systems also require power protection components capable of handling higher voltages and responding quickly to abnormal operating conditions.
The TCKE1401NM is designed for this environment, offering an 80V rating and an operating input-voltage range from 4.7V to 75V. This wide operating range allows the device to support power-line protection in 24V, 48V and 54V systems.
The higher voltage tolerance provides additional protection headroom for equipment designers, while the device’s integrated functions reduce the need for multiple discrete components.
Multiple Protection Functions in One Device
An eFuse IC acts as a semiconductor-based alternative to conventional physical fuses. Traditional fuses primarily protect circuits by interrupting current when an excessive current condition occurs. An eFuse, by contrast, can combine current protection with several other monitoring and shutdown functions in a single semiconductor device.
Toshiba’s new TCKE1401NM integrates functions designed to protect downstream circuits from a variety of abnormal conditions. These include overcurrent protection, overvoltage protection, true reverse-current blocking, input reverse-polarity protection and thermal shutdown.
By integrating these capabilities into one IC, manufacturers can simplify power-protection designs and potentially reduce board area. This is particularly valuable in industrial systems where PCB space is limited and where equipment designers need to accommodate increasingly sophisticated electronics.
Compact Package Helps Reduce PCB Size
One of the key features of the TCKE1401NM is its compact VQFN24D package, which measures approximately 4.0mm × 4.0mm, with a maximum thickness of 0.9mm.
Toshiba describes this as an industry-leading small package for an 80V-rated eFuse IC, based on the company’s August 2026 survey.
The smaller package can help designers reduce PCB footprint while retaining multiple protection functions. Compact power-management components can be especially useful in industrial control equipment, networking hardware, robotics and other systems where space, thermal performance and reliability are important design considerations.
Low On-Resistance Supports Efficiency
The TCKE1401NM also features a typical on-resistance of 44.5mΩ, with a maximum specified value of 80mΩ under the stated conditions.
Low on-resistance is important because resistance in the power path contributes to energy loss and heat generation during operation. By keeping resistance low, the new eFuse IC can help reduce power losses and support more efficient operation.
This characteristic can be particularly relevant for equipment operating continuously or under relatively high current loads, including servers, industrial automation systems and networking equipment.
Adjustable Current-Limiting Protection
The device provides configurable overcurrent protection that limits output current when an abnormal current condition is detected. Designers can adjust the current-limit threshold using an external resistor, allowing the protection characteristics to be matched to the requirements of different systems.
Under Toshiba’s specified conditions, the typical current-limit values include approximately 0.82A, 2.21A, 4.83A and 6.43A, depending on the selected external resistance.
The device also includes a fast-trip function designed to respond quickly to severe overcurrent conditions. Toshiba specifies a typical fast-trip response time of approximately 3 microseconds under specified 48V operating conditions.
For less severe overcurrent events, the current-limit response is specified at approximately 100 microseconds under the stated test conditions.
These response capabilities are intended to help prevent excessive current from damaging downstream components and other parts of the power system.
Overvoltage and Reverse-Current Protection
In addition to current limiting, the TCKE1401NM can shut down its output when an overvoltage condition is detected. The operating threshold can be configured with an external resistor, giving designers flexibility when developing protection circuits for different applications.
The device also supports true reverse-current blocking and input reverse-polarity protection. These functions use external MOSFETs to provide additional protection for both the eFuse IC and downstream circuitry.
Reverse-current protection can be important in systems where multiple power sources, capacitive loads or other circuit conditions could potentially cause current to flow in an unintended direction.

Monitoring and System-Level Control
Toshiba has also incorporated several monitoring and control functions into the new eFuse IC.
A FLAG function provides an external signal when the device detects an abnormal condition. This allows a system controller or other external circuit to recognize a fault and take appropriate action.
The power-good function provides information about the status of the output voltage. It can notify an external circuit when the output reaches a specified voltage level, helping system designers integrate the eFuse into broader power-management and monitoring architectures.
An output current-monitoring function is also included, providing additional visibility into system operation.
Together, these features allow the eFuse IC to serve not only as a protection component but also as part of a larger system-monitoring strategy.
Thermal Shutdown and Recovery Options
Thermal protection is another important feature of the TCKE1401NM. If an unexpected short circuit or abnormal heat generation causes the device temperature to rise excessively, the thermal shutdown function turns off the eFuse IC.
This helps prevent thermal stress from damaging the device or downstream circuitry.
The recovery behavior can be configured using two operating modes. In auto-retry mode, the eFuse attempts to recover automatically after the abnormal condition is removed or the relevant conditions are met. In latch-off mode, recovery requires an external signal.
The ability to select between these modes gives designers greater control over how equipment responds to faults.
Wide Range of Applications
Toshiba expects the TCKE1401NM to be suitable for a broad range of industrial and consumer products.
Potential industrial applications include servers, network equipment, factory automation systems, robots and multifunction printers. The device can also be used in consumer products such as power tools and home appliances.
As equipment manufacturers continue to pursue higher power density, greater efficiency and smaller form factors, integrated protection devices such as the TCKE1401NM can help simplify power architecture while improving system reliability.
Key Specifications
The TCKE1401NM supports an input operating voltage of 4.7V to 75V, with an 80V maximum input-voltage rating at an ambient temperature of 25°C. Its operating junction-temperature range extends from -40°C to 125°C.
The device uses Toshiba’s VQFN24D package, measuring approximately 4.0mm × 4.0mm, with a maximum thickness of 0.9mm. Its typical on-resistance is 44.5mΩ.
With its combination of high voltage tolerance, low resistance, compact packaging and multiple protection functions, the new eFuse IC is positioned as a flexible solution for modern power-management designs.
Expanding Toshiba’s eFuse Portfolio
The launch of the TCKE1401NM reflects Toshiba’s continued focus on developing semiconductor solutions for safer and more reliable power systems. The company said it plans to continue expanding its eFuse IC portfolio to address a wider range of power-protection requirements.
The move comes as industrial electronics increasingly require sophisticated protection against overcurrent, overvoltage, reverse-current and thermal events. By combining these functions into compact semiconductor devices, Toshiba aims to help manufacturers build smaller, more efficient and more reliable equipment.
The TCKE1401NM is now shipping and adds an 80V-rated option to Toshiba’s eFuse lineup, offering designers a solution specifically suited to higher-voltage power architectures, including systems operating at 48V and 54V.
