U.S. Defense Innovation Unit Selects 3ME Technology for EdgeVOLT® Prototype

3ME Technology Selected by U.S. Defense Innovation Unit to Demonstrate EdgeVOLT® Portable Energy Storage

NEWCASTLE, Australia — 3ME Technology has been selected by the U.S. Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to deliver and demonstrate its EdgeVOLT® portable energy storage system as part of the Portable Resilient Integrated Storage Module (PRISM) program.

The selection marks an important milestone for the Australian advanced battery company and strengthens its growing role in developing resilient, deployable energy solutions for defense and other mission-critical applications. Through the PRISM program, 3ME Technology will demonstrate how its battery technology can provide reliable, portable power in demanding operational environments where energy availability, mobility and endurance are critical.

The program reflects the increasing importance of resilient energy infrastructure to modern defense operations. As military forces deploy communications equipment, sensors, autonomous systems and other electrically powered technologies in remote and challenging environments, access to dependable power is becoming increasingly important. Portable energy storage can help provide greater flexibility while reducing dependence on traditional fuel-based generators.

“This award is an important opportunity for 3ME Technology to demonstrate how Australian-developed energy systems can help address power and endurance challenges for defense users,” said Justin Bain, CEO of 3ME Technology.

As an AUKUS Authorised User, 3ME Technology’s participation in the PRISM program also highlights the potential of AUKUS Pillar II to support collaboration on advanced defense capabilities across Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Advancing Resilient Energy for Defense

Under the prototype program, 3ME Technology will provide the standard EdgeVOLT configuration alongside a specialized cold-weather variant featuring South 8 Technologies’ LiGas® battery cells.

The U.S LiGas® technology is engineered to operate across an extreme temperature range of -60°C to +60°C, making it suitable for applications where conventional battery systems may face performance limitations. The cold-weather configuration is intended to demonstrate the ability to deliver dependable energy in harsh environmental conditions and expand the range of locations in which portable battery systems can be deployed.

Extreme temperatures, remote operating locations and limited access to conventional power infrastructure can create significant challenges for defense personnel. Energy systems must therefore be rugged, adaptable and capable of operating reliably across a wide range of conditions. The PRISM prototype program provides an opportunity to evaluate these capabilities in a defense-focused environment.

EdgeVOLT®: Portable and Modular Power

EdgeVOLT® is a rugged, modular energy storage platform developed by 3ME Technology for applications that require dependable portable power in demanding field conditions.

The U.S system is designed to provide energy for a range of equipment and mission requirements, including communications systems, sensors, field infrastructure, autonomous platforms and other mission-critical equipment. Its modular architecture allows energy capacity to be configured according to operational requirements, providing users with greater flexibility in how and where power is deployed.

By bringing stored electrical energy closer to the point of use, portable systems such as EdgeVOLT can help reduce reliance on conventional fuel-based generators. This can potentially simplify power logistics, reduce the need for fuel transportation and support greater operational flexibility.

For U.S defense users operating in remote environments, energy resilience can directly influence mission endurance. Reliable portable power can help maintain communications, sensing, autonomous capabilities and other essential equipment when access to fixed infrastructure is limited or unavailable.

EdgeVOLT is designed with these operational requirements in mind, combining portability, modularity and ruggedized construction to support users working in challenging environments.

Supporting AUKUS Technology Collaboration

3ME Technology’s involvement in the PRISM program also demonstrates the growing opportunities for Australian companies to contribute to advanced defense technology initiatives under the AUKUS framework.

AUKUS Pillar II focuses on cooperation between Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States in developing and delivering advanced military capabilities. Participation by Australian technology companies can help strengthen industrial collaboration and create opportunities to introduce innovative technologies into allied defense applications.

As an AUKUS Authorised User, 3ME Technology is positioned to contribute its Australian-developed battery expertise to this collaborative environment. The company’s participation in the PRISM program represents an opportunity to demonstrate Australian innovation while supporting shared objectives around defense resilience, energy security and operational capability.

From Prototype to Production

The U.S PRISM program is focused on rapid development and demonstration of emerging technologies with the potential to address real-world defense requirements. For 3ME Technology, the program provides an opportunity to demonstrate EdgeVOLT in a defense environment and gather valuable operational insight.

The U.S prototype-to-production approach is intended to accelerate the transition of promising technologies from development into practical applications. For energy storage technologies, this process can help validate performance, reliability, environmental resilience and usability against demanding operational requirements.

3ME Technology will bring its experience in advanced battery systems and electrification to the U.S program, with a focus on delivering practical energy solutions designed for mission-critical environments.

“This U.S award is an important opportunity for 3ME Technology to demonstrate how Australian-developed energy systems can help address power and endurance challenges for defense users,” said Justin Bain. “We are proud to support the Defense Innovation Unit program and to contribute our experience in mission-ready power solutions to this rapid prototype to production effort.”

The U.S company expects the program to further demonstrate the potential of portable energy storage as an important component of modern defense power infrastructure.
