WEX Inc. Announces Second Quarter 2026 Financial Results

WEX Reports Strong Second Quarter 2026 Results, Raises Full-Year Financial Outlook

WEX Inc. (NYSE: WEX), a global provider of intelligent payment solutions, reported strong financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2026, highlighted by double-digit revenue growth, higher profitability, and improved full-year guidance. The company also continued to strengthen its balance sheet while returning capital to shareholders through share repurchases.

Chief Executive Officer and President Melissa Smith said WEX delivered another quarter of performance above expectations as the company continued executing its long-term growth strategy.

“We are continuing to build momentum, exceeding our guidance ranges once again during the second quarter while advancing strategic initiatives designed to accelerate our performance,” Smith said. “Our disciplined investment approach allows us to focus on the highest-return opportunities that strengthen our core business while expanding into attractive new markets. At the same time, we remain committed to balancing investments for future growth with shareholder returns, including approximately $93 million in share repurchases completed between May and July 20.”

Revenue and Earnings Growth

WEX generated second-quarter revenue of $753.5 million, representing a 14.2% increase compared with the same period last year. Revenue growth benefited from favorable fuel prices and foreign exchange movements, which contributed approximately $63.8 million and $2.1 million, respectively.

The company also reported significantly stronger profitability during the quarter. Net income reached $108.5 million, or $3.11 per diluted share, representing a 57.1% increase in earnings per share year over year.

On an adjusted basis, net income totaled $186.5 million, or $5.35 per diluted share, reflecting a 35.4% increase from the prior-year period.

Operating performance also improved considerably. Operating income margin increased to 27.0%, compared with 23.8% a year earlier, while adjusted operating income margin expanded to 39.6%, up from 36.8%.

Across all business segments, total payment volume climbed to $68.9 billion, marking a 15.7% increase year over year and demonstrating continued customer activity across the company’s global platform.

Mobility Business Delivers Strongest Growth

The Mobility segment remained WEX’s largest contributor during the quarter, benefiting from stronger fuel prices and continued demand for fleet payment and management solutions.

The business generated $422.4 million in revenue, representing 22.0% growth over the prior year. Operating income margin reached 34.9%, while adjusted operating income margin improved to 43.2%.

Payment processing transactions totaled 139.3 million, remaining essentially stable with a modest 0.1% increase despite changing market conditions.

Serving more than 600,000 fleet customers worldwide, the Mobility segment continues to provide integrated payment, fleet management, and operational solutions for businesses of all sizes.

Benefits Segment Maintains Steady Expansion

WEX’s Benefits business continued delivering consistent growth as employers increasingly adopted digital healthcare and employee benefits solutions.

Quarterly revenue reached $206.0 million, representing a 5.6% increase compared with the previous year.

Operating income margin improved to 27.1%, while adjusted operating income margin reached 40.5%.

The company’s Software-as-a-Service platform supported an average of 21.7 million accounts, reflecting 2.2% growth, while average Health Savings Account (HSA) custodial cash assets increased 11.1% to $5.2 billion.

The segment continues to provide integrated administration for HSAs, FSAs, HRAs, COBRA programs, and employee benefits enrollment through both direct customer relationships and partner networks.

Corporate Payments Shows Stable Performance

The Corporate Payments segment also posted positive revenue growth despite softer purchase volumes.

Revenue increased 5.8% year over year to $125.1 million, supported by continued demand for secure business-to-business payment solutions.

Operating income margin reached 37.5%, while adjusted operating income margin expanded to 46.7%.

Purchase volume declined 3.6% to $19.8 billion, reflecting customer spending patterns. However, total processed payment volume—including transactions that do not generate interchange revenue—increased 4.5% to $38.6 billion, highlighting continued platform utilization by enterprise customers.

Cash Flow and Balance Sheet

During the second quarter, WEX reported net cash used in operating activities of $77.6 million, compared with $264.6 million in operating cash generated during the same quarter of 2025.

Management attributed the difference primarily to higher domestic fuel prices, which increased customer receivable balances.

Despite this temporary impact, adjusted free cash flow increased to $219.0 million, compared with $194.3 million in the prior-year quarter.

The company also strengthened its financial position by reducing leverage. WEX’s leverage ratio declined to 2.9x as of June 30, 2026, compared with 3.1x at both March 31, 2026 and year-end 2025.

Chief Financial Officer Jagtar Narula said the company continues to generate healthy cash flows while improving financial flexibility.

“We continue to see resilient performance across all of our businesses,” Narula said. “Strong fuel prices supported our second-quarter outperformance and contributed to our decision to raise full-year guidance. During the first half of the year we used incremental cash flows to reduce leverage and further strengthen our balance sheet.”

He added that, subject to market conditions, WEX intends to allocate the majority of future adjusted free cash flow toward additional share repurchases, reinforcing its commitment to shareholder value creation.

Raising 2026 Financial Outlook

Reflecting strong first-half results and favorable market conditions, WEX increased its financial outlook for the remainder of 2026.

For the third quarter, the company expects revenue between $733 million and $753 million, while adjusted net income is projected to range from $189 million to $196 million, or $5.45 to $5.65 per diluted share.

For the full year, WEX now expects revenue between $2.86 billion and $2.90 billion, representing an increase from its previous forecast of $2.82 billion to $2.88 billion.

The company also raised adjusted net income guidance to $689 million to $703 million, or $19.68 to $20.08 per diluted share, compared with previous expectations of $667 million to $688 million, or $18.95 to $19.55 per diluted share.

Management’s outlook assumes average U.S. retail fuel prices of approximately $3.90 per gallon during the third quarter and $3.91 per gallon for the full year, based on prevailing NYMEX futures pricing. Guidance also assumes a 25% adjusted effective tax rate, Mobility credit losses within historical ranges, and weighted average diluted shares outstanding of approximately 34.7 million during the third quarter and 35.0 million for the full year.

Continued Focus on Growth and Shareholder Returns

Management noted that the company’s investment strategy remains centered on expanding its intelligent payments platform while maintaining disciplined capital allocation. Alongside investments in technology, product innovation, and market expansion, WEX continues returning capital to shareholders through an active share repurchase program supported by robust free cash flow generation.
