W4 Games Secures $18 Million to Accelerate Global Expansion
W4 Games, a company focused on providing enterprise technology, tools and support for the open-source Godot Engine, has raised $18 million in Series B funding as it looks to accelerate international expansion, strengthen its enterprise offering and meet growing demand from professional developers and game studios using Godot.
The latest investment round was led by Tencent, with participation from existing and other investors, including OSS Capital, Lux Capital, Naval Ravikant and the family office of Tobias Lütke. The new funding brings W4 Games’ total capital raised to $33 million since the company was founded.
As part of the expansion, W4 Games plans to increase the size of its international team by approximately 50%. The company will also accelerate the development of technologies and services designed to help enterprise customers build, develop and launch video games using Godot Engine.
Alongside the funding announcement, W4 Games has entered into a multi-year strategic partnership with Tencent. The collaboration is designed to help W4 Games expand its business and increase the reach and adoption of the Godot ecosystem across Asia.
The partnership is expected to focus on helping enterprise developers, studios and other organizations across the region adopt Godot and W4 Games’ commercial technologies. Areas of collaboration will include go-to-market initiatives, localization, ecosystem development, technical support, advocacy and broader market-development activities.
Godot’s Growing Developer Community
The investment comes as Godot Engine continues to gain momentum among game developers worldwide. Known for its flexibility, open-source development model and permissive licensing, Godot has increasingly emerged as an alternative to proprietary game-development engines.
Godot Engine is released under the MIT license, allowing developers and organizations to use and modify the technology with relatively few restrictions. The project is developed by a global community and overseen by the independent, nonprofit Godot Foundation.
Over the past several years, adoption of the engine has expanded significantly. Data cited by W4 Games from SteamDB indicates that the number of Godot-powered video games released on Steam increased by more than 50% year over year in both 2024 and 2025.
W4 Games also analyzed data from Gamalytic and found that the number of Godot-powered games generating more than $1 million in annual sales increased from just two titles to more than 50 over a three-year period. While these figures represent a portion of the broader gaming market, the company says they demonstrate the growing commercial presence of Godot-based games.
Community-driven events have also highlighted the engine’s growing popularity among newer developers. At events such as Global Game Jam and GMTK Game Jam, the proportion of submitted games created using Godot has reportedly increased from approximately 10% in 2022 to around 50%.
The shift has helped create an expanding ecosystem of developers who are becoming familiar with Godot early in their careers and increasingly using the engine for commercial projects.
Bringing Godot to Enterprise Developers
W4 Games was founded by core contributors and developers involved with the Godot project. The company was established to help bridge the gap between the open-source engine and the needs of professional game studios and enterprise customers.
Its commercial offering includes tools, cloud services and professional support designed to help organizations build and ship games using Godot. The company aims to provide enterprise developers with the infrastructure and services they need while maintaining the open-source nature of the underlying engine.
The new investment will allow W4 Games to expand these capabilities and respond to increasing interest from larger studios and professional development teams.
“We’re excited to work with Tencent to build on the momentum and further establish Godot Engine as a leading platform for companies creating the next generation of video games,” said Juan Linietsky, creator of Godot Engine and founder of W4 Games.
The partnership with Tencent is particularly significant for W4 Games’ expansion into Asia, where the company sees opportunities to introduce Godot and its enterprise technologies to a broader range of developers and studios.
“This collaboration with Tencent marks an important next step for W4 Games as we expand globally and bring Godot to more studios and developers,” said Nicola Farronato, Co-CEO of W4 Games.
“With Tencent as both a strategic partner and an investor, we have an opportunity to accelerate the adoption of enterprise-ready Godot technologies, particularly in Asia, while continuing to strengthen the open-source ecosystem that sits at the heart of everything we do,” Farronato added.
Expanding the Godot Ecosystem in Asia
Under the strategic agreement, W4 Games and Tencent will work together to expand awareness and adoption of Godot Engine among developers, enterprises and game studios throughout Asia.
The companies expect their collaboration to cover several areas, including regional go-to-market strategies, localization of technologies and services, ecosystem support, developer advocacy and market development.
For W4 Games, the partnership provides an opportunity to combine its expertise in Godot-based enterprise technology with Tencent’s established presence in the Asian technology and gaming markets.
The collaboration also comes at a time when game developers are increasingly evaluating alternatives to traditional proprietary development platforms. Open-source technologies can provide developers with greater flexibility and control over their development environments, while also allowing communities to contribute directly to the evolution of the underlying technology.
W4 Games intends to use its expanded resources to help address the technical and operational requirements of professional studios while continuing to support the broader open-source community surrounding Godot.

Continuing Contributions to Open Source
Despite its focus on enterprise services, W4 Games says its commercial growth will remain closely connected to the development of the wider Godot project.
The company expects its contributions to the Godot Engine project to increase alongside its enterprise business. Where possible, improvements and technologies developed through work with commercial customers will be contributed back to the upstream Godot project.
This approach allows technical advancements developed to address the needs of individual studios to potentially benefit developers throughout the broader Godot community.
The company views this relationship between commercial development and open-source contribution as an important part of its long-term strategy.
With the latest funding, W4 Games plans to continue investing in its technology, expanding its international workforce and developing new enterprise-focused capabilities. The company also expects to pursue additional opportunities to grow the Godot ecosystem in international markets.
