Apple Unveils iPhone Duo, Its First Foldable iPhone

Apple today introduced iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, marking a major new chapter in the company’s smartphone lineup. Designed to combine the portability of a traditional iPhone with the expansive experience of a larger display, iPhone Duo features a 7.6-inch inner screen when opened and a 5.4-inch outer display when closed.

The new device is designed for content consumption, gaming, productivity, photography, and multitasking, while maintaining a compact form factor that fits easily into a pocket. Both displays use the same aspect ratio, allowing content to scale proportionally as users transition between the folded and unfolded configurations.

iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, supported by an advanced thermal management system featuring a custom-designed vapor chamber and dual-battery architecture. Together, these technologies are designed to deliver strong performance and all-day battery life in the company’s new foldable form factor.

The device is available in star white and night sky, with a Grade 5 titanium enclosure featuring a mirror-polished finish. Pre-orders begin Friday, October 16, with availability starting Friday, October 23.

“iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original,” said John Ternus, Apple’s CEO. “With an entirely new design and intuitive experiences, it shows what’s possible when hardware and software are engineered together and redefines what it means to use a foldable phone.”

Two Displays in a New Foldable Design

iPhone Duo features Apple’s largest iPhone display to date. When closed, the 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display provides approximately 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro while remaining compact enough for one-handed use.

Opening the device reveals a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display, which Apple says is 50 percent larger than the display on iPhone 18 Pro Max. The larger screen provides additional space for watching content, playing games, working across applications, and handling multiple tasks simultaneously.

The inner display incorporates a premium nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and reflections while providing a matte surface that minimizes the appearance of the fold. Both displays support ProMotion, Always-On functionality, and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.

A new FaceTime camera is positioned beneath the inner display, allowing Apple to maintain an uninterrupted viewing area. Later this year, iPhone Duo will also support Apple Pencil with USB-C, enabling users to take notes, sketch, and mark up documents on either display.

Touch ID is integrated into the side button for authentication whether the device is open or closed. The phone also includes Camera Control for quick camera access, including a new Siri Camera mode that allows Siri to analyze what the camera sees and provide information or take actions based on the visual content.

Built for Durability

Apple has designed iPhone Duo with a focus on structural strength and long-term durability. The enclosure uses Grade 5 titanium, while Ceramic Shield protects the back of the device. The outer display uses Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says offers three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation.

The precision hinge contains more than 100 components and is engineered to control the opening and closing motion while supporting the center of the display. An integrated magnet array helps provide a secure closure and a smooth feel during use.

Additional structural reinforcement comes from internal support ribs and antenna splits with ceramic fiber inserts, which are designed to increase rigidity.

The folding display uses a multilayer construction that combines a scratch-resistant coating, nano-textured cover layer, high-strength glass, custom adhesives, and a titanium plate. Apple says the adhesives allow the layers to move relative to one another during folding, helping reduce bending stress and maintain the display’s structure over time.

iPhone Duo is also rated IP68 for splash, water, and dust resistance.

Advanced Cameras and New Photography Experiences

The foldable design also introduces new possibilities for photography and video. iPhone Duo features a 48MP Fusion Main camera capable of capturing images at up to 48MP resolution, with a 24MP default setting designed to balance image quality and file size.

The main camera includes a computational imaging pipeline, a large sensor, fast aperture, and sensor-shift optical image stabilization. An integrated optical-quality 2x Telephoto option provides additional flexibility for closer subjects.

A 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera enables wide-angle photography and macro shots, while the Center Stage front camera can automatically capture photos and videos in different orientations without requiring users to rotate the phone.

Apple is also introducing new photography tools, including upgraded Photographic Styles with greater control over texture and grain.

The foldable form factor enables several experiences unavailable on other iPhones. Smart Take uses on-device AI models running on A20 Pro to analyze scenes and automatically capture images when subjects are ready. Duo Preview allows people being photographed to see the live camera preview on the outer display, while Kid Cue uses Peanuts animations to attract children’s attention toward the camera.

Duo FaceTime allows participants to join video calls using the outer display and camera, while the new FaceTime camera beneath the inner display supports hands-free video calls when the phone is opened or propped up.

For video creators, the main camera supports 4K video recording at 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision, enabling slow-motion effects. Cinematic effects can also be applied after recording at up to 60 frames per second, while Audio Mix uses new algorithms to improve voice quality and isolate music. Time-lapse recording is supported in 4K Dolby Vision HDR.

iOS 27 Designed for Foldable Interaction

iPhone Duo runs iOS 27, which has been redesigned to take advantage of the device’s two-display configuration while retaining the familiar iPhone experience.

Essential controls, including Lock Screen controls, the Home Screen Dock, and application navigation, move to the side of the display to maximize vertical space. When the device is open, users can access two Home Screen pages along with Today View and customizable widgets.

The redesigned interface automatically adapts as the device is folded, opened, rotated, or flipped. Live Activities and alerts are integrated into the redesigned Dynamic Island, while the status bar uses a flexible circular design that fits into the corner of the display.

Apple has also expanded multitasking capabilities. Split View allows users to run two apps side by side, while users can open two windows of the same application, quickly switch between apps, or save frequently used app combinations for later.

The larger display also enables users to interact with Siri AI while viewing content on another part of the screen.

Apple says applications including Netflix, Zoom, Slack, and other third-party software are being optimized for iPhone Duo, while developers can adapt their applications using new APIs and updated SDKs.

Apple Intelligence and a New Siri

iPhone Duo also integrates Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI, which is rolling out in beta with iOS 27.

The redesigned Siri is designed to use personal context, onscreen awareness, and conversational interactions to help users find information and complete tasks across apps. It can draw on information from messages, emails, photos, and other content, while also responding to what is displayed on the screen.

The new Siri app allows users to revisit previous conversations and begin new ones, with conversational history synchronized privately through iCloud.

Apple Intelligence also introduces enhanced image-editing capabilities, including Spatial Reframing, Extend, and an upgraded Clean Up feature. Image Playground now supports photorealistic imagery, while Safari’s Notify Me feature can monitor web pages for changes such as product availability or price reductions.

Apple says privacy remains central to its AI approach, with processing performed on-device where possible and Private Cloud Compute extending privacy and security protections to cloud-based processing.

With its foldable design, large dual-display experience, A20 Pro performance, advanced camera system, redesigned iOS experience, and integrated AI capabilities, iPhone Duo represents Apple’s entry into a new category of smartphones, combining the portability of an iPhone with the flexibility of a larger mobile workspace.
