Advanced Camera System with Variable Aperture
The centerpiece of the new iPhone 18 Pro lineup is an upgraded camera system designed to give photographers and creators greater control over their images.
The 48MP Fusion Main camera introduces variable aperture to iPhone for the first time. Using six laser-cut blades and a new rotor mechanism, the camera can smoothly transition between aperture settings, automatically adjusting for lighting conditions and depth of field.
The system is designed to improve low-light photography, capture sharper details, and provide greater creative flexibility. Users can also manually select from four aperture settings directly within the Camera app, while developers can access an API that enables additional aperture control in supported applications.
A new computational photography pipeline further improves image quality, while updated Photographic Styles provide additional control over texture and grain. These features allow users to customize the look of their images while maintaining the flexibility expected from a professional camera system.
New Pro Controls for Photography and Video
Apple is also introducing Pro controls, a customizable experience within the Camera app that provides easier access to frequently used settings and expanded manual controls.
Users can adjust aperture, shutter speed, and white balance, while a built-in histogram provides a way to monitor exposure across a scene. These capabilities are designed to make iPhone 18 Pro more versatile for professional photographers, videographers, and advanced users.
The video experience has also been enhanced. Users can apply Cinematic effects after recording videos at up to 60 frames per second, while Time-lapse now supports 4K resolution and Dolby Vision HDR. Audio Mix uses new algorithms to improve voice quality and can isolate music, providing creators with greater control over recorded sound.
Apple Reference Image Focuses on Image Authenticity
iPhone 18 Pro introduces Apple Reference Image, a new feature designed to help users verify the authenticity of photographs.
Using the new Main camera sensor, Reference mode captures signed sensor data that Private Cloud Compute processes into an unalterable reference image. Users can view the reference image alongside the original photograph in the Photos app, providing a visual comparison to determine whether changes were made.
Apple is also introducing support for image-authenticity technologies, including upcoming integration with the SynthID standard. Together, these capabilities are designed to provide additional context around photographs that have been generated or edited using AI.
The tools could be particularly useful for photographers, journalists, and other users who need greater confidence in the provenance of digital images.
More Useful Dynamic Island
The Dynamic Island receives an update on iPhone 18 Pro, providing more space for information while retaining its role in authentication and interactive notifications.
The redesigned Dynamic Island can display up to three Live Activities simultaneously, allowing users to monitor multiple activities at a glance. It continues to support Face ID for unlocking the device, authenticating purchases, signing into applications, and other secure functions.
A20 Pro Delivers Next-Level Performance
At the heart of both new Pro models is the A20 Pro, built using a 2-nanometer process and designed to provide a significant performance and efficiency boost.
The chip features a new six-core CPU with integrated Neural Accelerators and 50 percent more memory bandwidth than A19 Pro. Its seven-core GPU is designed to deliver up to 40 percent faster graphics performance than the previous generation.
A20 Pro also includes a dual 16-core Neural Engine, providing 32 total Neural Engine cores and twice the AI processing capability of A19 Pro. This additional processing power supports demanding applications, advanced computational photography, on-device AI workloads, and graphics-intensive gaming.
The new N1 wireless networking chip supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. iPhone 18 Pro also introduces C2, Apple’s next-generation cellular modem system, which uses AI-powered improvements to enhance cellular quality and reliability. Apple says C2 provides faster uploads than C1X while using less energy and supports mmWave connectivity in the United States.

Improved Thermal Management
To maintain high performance during demanding workloads, Apple has redesigned the thermal architecture of iPhone 18 Pro.
A20 Pro uses a new packaging approach that positions the silicon and memory side by side, allowing the chip to connect directly to a next-generation vapor chamber. The redesigned vapor chamber features three times the surface area of the previous generation used in iPhone 17 Pro.
Apple says the new thermal system enables up to a 40 percent improvement in sustained performance, allowing the devices to maintain high processing levels for longer periods during gaming, video production, AI workloads, and other demanding tasks.
Longer Battery Life and Faster Charging
Battery life receives another major upgrade across the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. New battery designs combined with improvements in Apple silicon efficiency allow the devices to deliver longer usage between charges.
eSIM-only models provide up to 36 hours of video playback on iPhone 18 Pro and up to 45 hours on iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The iPhone 18 Pro can charge to approximately 50 percent in around 15 minutes using wired charging, while wireless charging can reach the same level in about 30 minutes. Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro Max can provide around seven hours of video playback from just five minutes of wired charging.
iOS 27 and the Next Generation of Siri
Both models run iOS 27, bringing new software capabilities alongside Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI.
Siri AI is designed to be more personal, capable, and conversational, using personal context and onscreen awareness to help users complete tasks and find information across applications. Siri can work with content from messages, emails, photos, and other apps, while Siri mode in the Camera app can provide information about objects and scenes visible through the camera.
Apple Intelligence also introduces enhanced image-editing features, including Spatial Reframing, Extend, and an upgraded Clean Up tool. Image Playground now supports photorealistic imagery, while Safari’s Notify Me feature can alert users when monitored web pages change, including product restocks and price updates.
Apple says privacy remains a core part of its AI strategy, with on-device processing complemented by Private Cloud Compute for cloud-based workloads.
eSIM, Accessories and Environmental Progress
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max expand eSIM support, providing a flexible and secure alternative to physical SIM cards. eSIM is supported by more than 500 carriers worldwide, and eSIM-only models benefit from additional internal space that enables larger batteries and up to two additional hours of video playback.
Apple is also introducing new accessories, including Silicone Cases, TechWoven Cases, Crossbody Straps, FineWoven Wallets, and a new Wrist Strap. The Wrist Strap uses 100 percent recycled polyester yarns and is available in six colors.
The new Pro models also continue Apple’s environmental efforts. iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max contain 40 percent recycled content overall, including 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery and 85 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure.
