Thales and Landis+Gyr Introduce Smarter Remote Connectivity for Smart Meter Networks

Thales and Landis+Gyr Advance Remote Connectivity for Smarter Smart Meter Fleets

Thales and Landis+Gyr as utilities accelerate the modernization of energy infrastructure, smart Remote meters are becoming an increasingly important component of connected energy networks. The growing deployment of intelligent meters is creating new requirements for reliable, scalable and flexible connectivity that can be managed throughout the lifetime of each device.

Landis+Gyr currently serves more than 2,000 utilities worldwide and has more than 180 million connected intelligent devices deployed in the field. In North America, the installed base of smart electricity meters is projected to increase from 152.4 million units in 2024 to 180.9 million by 2030, according to Berg Insight.

To Remote support this expanding connected infrastructure, Thales and Landis+Gyr are combining next-generation eSIM technology with centralized connectivity management capabilities. The solution is designed to help utilities remotely manage cellular connectivity across individual smart meters as well as large-scale fleets.

Remote Connectivity Management for Smart Meters

Thales’ latest IoT eSIM technology is compliant with the GSMA’s SGP.32 specification, which enables remote management of connectivity profiles on IoT devices.

With SGP.32, network profiles can be provisioned, changed and managed over the air. This reduces dependence on physical SIM replacement and gives operators greater flexibility when managing devices deployed in locations that may be difficult or costly to access.

For Remote utilities operating large smart-meter fleets, the ability to modify connectivity remotely can provide an important operational advantage. Rather than sending technicians into the field to replace SIM cards when network requirements change, connectivity profiles can be managed digitally.

This capability can also support interoperability across the broader IoT ecosystem, helping utilities adapt their connectivity strategies as network technologies, operators and coverage conditions evolve.

A Centralized View of Connected Assets

Thales’ eSIM technology is being combined with Simetric’s centralized connectivity management platform, creating what the companies describe as a “single pane of glass” for connected device operations.

The platform provides utilities with a centralized environment for monitoring, managing, analyzing and orchestrating connectivity across their fleets. This can give operators greater visibility into network performance and the status of connected devices while reducing the complexity associated with managing connectivity across multiple networks.

As IoT deployments grow from thousands to millions of connected devices, centralized management becomes increasingly important. Utilities need tools that can provide visibility across large fleets while enabling connectivity decisions to be made quickly and remotely.

The combined solution is intended to help utilities move beyond basic connectivity management toward a more automated approach in which network profiles and connectivity choices can be managed throughout a meter’s operational lifecycle.

Greater Flexibility Across the Meter Lifecycle

Smart meters can remain deployed in the field for many years, during which time network conditions and connectivity requirements may change.

For utilities, replacing or physically modifying large numbers of meters simply because connectivity technology has changed can be expensive and operationally challenging. Remote connectivity management provides another approach by allowing the network profile associated with a device to be updated without replacing the underlying hardware.

The solution supports both SIM- and eSIM-enabled devices, allowing utilities to maintain a unified view of connectivity operations across different generations of equipment and technologies.

This flexibility can help utilities respond to changes in network availability, adapt connectivity strategies and maintain service continuity throughout the lifetime of their smart-meter infrastructure.

“No utility wants to replace thousands of devices just because technology changes,” said Roque Martin, Senior Vice President of Connected Platforms at Landis+Gyr. “Our collaboration with Thales helps solve that challenge by giving utilities the flexibility to adapt connectivity over time without swapping out hardware in the field. As this capability becomes part of our Revelo® and Surent® platforms, customers can choose the network approach that works best for them today and adjust as their needs evolve in the future.”

Remote

Supporting Large-Scale IoT Deployments

The growing number of connected energy devices is increasing the importance of scalable connectivity management. Smart meters need reliable communications to transmit information between the meter, utility and broader energy-management infrastructure.

As deployments expand, manually managing connectivity becomes increasingly difficult. A centralized platform can provide utilities with greater control over their connected assets while supporting automation and remote management.

“Thales’ latest IoT eSIM technology lays the foundation for scalable and flexible smart metering connectivity, but its real value lies in turning connectivity into a strategic operational asset,” said Nicolas Bouverot, VP Mobile Connectivity Solutions at Thales.

“As deployments scale, utilities need automation, a single pane of glass and real-time control across millions of connected devices. Together with Simetric, we help utilities move from simply managing connectivity to intelligently orchestrating it; ensuring the right meter is connected to the right network at the right time throughout its lifecycle,” Bouverot added.

Thales Expands Secure eSIM Capabilities

Thales brings extensive experience in secure connectivity and eSIM subscription management to the IoT market. Its solutions support more than 450 mobile network operators and more than 200 OEMs across consumer and IoT applications.

The company has also achieved GSMA eSA certification for SGP.32, covering security aspects of its eSIM technology and supporting commercial deployments of the standard across industries, including smart energy.

The adoption of standards such as SGP.32 is expected to play an important role as connected-device deployments continue to expand. Standardized remote connectivity management can help organizations reduce dependence on physical SIMs and simplify the management of devices deployed across different networks and geographical locations.

For utilities, these capabilities can be particularly relevant because smart-meter fleets often span large territories and include devices installed in locations that are difficult to access.

Enabling a More Flexible Connected Energy Infrastructure

The collaboration between Thales and Landis+Gyr reflects the broader evolution of smart metering from simple measurement infrastructure toward connected, remotely managed energy systems.

With remote eSIM management, centralized connectivity monitoring and support for both SIM and eSIM devices, utilities can gain greater flexibility in managing communications across their fleets.

The technology can help utilities respond to changing connectivity requirements without necessarily replacing deployed hardware, while centralized management provides greater visibility into the performance and status of connected assets.

As smart-meter deployments continue to grow, these capabilities could become increasingly important for utilities seeking to operate large-scale IoT networks efficiently and maintain reliable connectivity throughout the lifecycle of their infrastructure.
