Axelera AI Strengthens Board with Appointments of Osman Kent and Catherine Lewis La Torre CBE
Axelera AI, a leading developer of purpose-built AI hardware acceleration technology, has announced the appointment of Osman Kent and Catherine Lewis La Torre CBE to its board of directors as non-executive directors. The appointments add significant expertise in semiconductor innovation, deep technology, venture capital, private equity, and business growth as Axelera AI continues to expand its global commercial presence.
The two new board members bring decades of combined experience supporting technology companies, developing semiconductor businesses, and strengthening Europe’s innovation ecosystem. Their expertise is expected to play an important role as Axelera AI scales its AI acceleration platforms and expands into new markets and applications.
“Osman is one of the luminaries of deep tech in Europe and helped invent the GPU, while Catherine has spent 35 years backing and building Europe’s innovation economy,” said Fabrizio Del Maffeo, CEO and co-founder of Axelera AI. “Their experience will be invaluable as we grow our global commercial scale.”
Osman Kent Brings Deep Semiconductor and GPU Expertise
Osman Kent joins Axelera AI’s board with extensive experience in semiconductor technology and the development of high-performance computing solutions. He co-founded and led 3Dlabs, a pioneering graphics semiconductor company that was once valued at approximately $1 billion and listed on NASDAQ.
3Dlabs is widely recognized as one of the early companies that helped establish the foundations of modern GPU technology. Kent’s work at the company placed him at the forefront of graphics processing innovation during a period when specialized computing architectures were rapidly transforming the technology industry.
Following his work at 3Dlabs, Kent went on to co-found Numecent, continuing his involvement in advanced computing and software technologies. He holds 21 U.S. patents covering various areas of technology and innovation.
Since 2018, Kent has also served as a venture partner at Atlantic Bridge Capital, where he focuses on foundational artificial intelligence technologies and fabless semiconductor companies. His experience spans both the creation of new chip technologies and the process of turning deep-tech innovations into commercially viable businesses.
Kent said he has followed Axelera AI since the company’s early days and believes its approach to AI inference represents an important opportunity for European technology.
“I’ve been following Axelera since its inception and it is doing for AI inference what 3Dlabs did for graphics: showing the world that Europe can build world-leading AI technology companies at commercial scale,” Kent said.
His experience is particularly relevant as demand for efficient AI inference continues to grow. As AI applications move beyond centralized cloud infrastructure and increasingly operate at the edge, businesses require specialized hardware capable of delivering high performance while meeting strict power, cooling, and cost requirements.
Kent’s background in graphics processors, semiconductor innovation, and deep-tech investment will provide Axelera AI with additional strategic expertise as it addresses these challenges.
Catherine Lewis La Torre CBE Adds Investment and Growth Expertise
Joining Kent on the board is Catherine Lewis La Torre CBE, an experienced leader in private equity, venture capital, and technology investment. Lewis La Torre brings more than 35 years of experience supporting companies and helping develop Europe’s broader innovation and investment ecosystem.
She co-founded her own private equity fund management firm in 1999 and has since held senior leadership positions across the investment and technology sectors.
From 2016 to 2023, Lewis La Torre served as Chief Executive of the British Business Bank and its commercial investment companies. During her tenure, she helped establish the institution as the largest domestic institutional investor in venture capital funds and technology companies in the United Kingdom.
Her leadership also included overseeing the delivery of the UK’s business support schemes introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing businesses with access to critical financial support during a period of significant economic disruption.
Lewis La Torre currently serves on the boards of HSBC Innovation Banking UK and Alantra Partners and is an adviser to Octopus Energy Generation. Her broad experience across financial markets, technology investment, and growth-stage businesses gives Axelera AI additional strategic insight as the company works to expand its commercial footprint.
“Axelera is exactly the kind of European deep-tech company that can compete globally in AI,” said Lewis La Torre. “For years I have focused on helping companies that can make a real difference in deep tech, life sciences, and climate; Axelera technology works across all of these segments and I’m excited to help the team turn technical leadership into lasting commercial success.”

Accelerating the Next Generation of AI Infrastructure
The appointments come as Axelera AI continues to develop its position in the rapidly expanding AI semiconductor market. The company is focused on creating specialized hardware designed to accelerate AI inference across edge computing and data center environments.
Axelera AI’s architecture is designed with an edge-first approach, addressing some of the key challenges associated with deploying AI at scale, including energy consumption, thermal constraints, and infrastructure requirements.
The company’s technology is already deployed across more than 600 customers, spanning sectors such as telecommunications, aerospace, and enterprise technology.
Its Europa and Metis platforms are designed to deliver high-performance AI inference while operating within the power and thermal limitations of real-world environments. This enables organizations to deploy AI applications closer to where data is generated, potentially reducing reliance on centralized cloud infrastructure while improving efficiency and responsiveness.
Axelera AI is also building a broader ecosystem around its hardware through its Partner Accelerator Network and Voyager SDK. These initiatives are designed to make the company’s technology more accessible to developers, system integrators, and commercial partners while supporting faster deployment of AI applications.
As AI adoption continues to expand across industries, efficient inference infrastructure is becoming increasingly important. Organizations are looking for solutions that can deliver the performance required by modern AI workloads without creating unsustainable energy, cooling, and infrastructure demands.
With the addition of Kent and Lewis La Torre, Axelera AI is strengthening its leadership capabilities at a pivotal stage of its growth. Kent’s semiconductor and GPU expertise, combined with Lewis La Torre’s experience in investment and scaling technology businesses, provides the company with complementary perspectives as it pursues international expansion.
The appointments reinforce Axelera AI’s ambition to establish Europe as a major force in the global AI semiconductor industry and to translate its technological capabilities into sustainable, long-term commercial growth.
