Perplexity Brings Agentic AI to Portable PCs With AMD Ryzen AI Max Series

AMD Ryzen AI Max Series Powers Perplexity’s Portable Agentic Computer Experience

AMD and Perplexity are expanding the capabilities of AI-powered PCs with the arrival of Portable Computer on supported Windows systems powered by AMD Ryzen™ AI Max Series processors. The availability also includes the AMD Ryzen™ AI Halo developer platform, giving developers, creators and AI innovators a new environment for exploring local, agentic AI workflows.

Announced September 24, 2026, the collaboration brings Perplexity’s Portable Computer experience to AMD-powered systems designed to handle demanding AI workloads locally. For Perplexity subscribers, the integration enables local AI tasks and recurring workflows to run directly on compatible hardware without consuming Perplexity Computer credits for inference.

The Perplexity move represents another step in AMD’s broader push to bring AI capabilities closer to users. Rather than relying exclusively on cloud infrastructure, the combination of capable local hardware and AI software allows PCs to perform more intelligent tasks directly on the device while retaining the flexibility to access cloud-based computing when additional resources are required.

Bringing Agentic AI to the PC

AMD has been expanding its AI computing portfolio across multiple generations of products. In 2023, the company introduced its first AI PCs, featuring the first dedicated NPU in an x86 processor. By 2025, AMD had extended that approach into what it describes as agentic PCs—systems designed to run AI agents locally and support more advanced interactions between users, applications and intelligent software.

With the Perplexity integration of Perplexity Portable Computer, AMD is now extending those capabilities into applications and workflows that users can access in their everyday computing environments.

Portable Computer is designed to bring AI agents, models and tools together in a way that enables users to automate tasks and workflows. On systems powered by AMD Ryzen AI Max Series processors, these capabilities can take advantage of local computing resources, allowing certain AI operations to run directly on the PC.

“We’re entering a new era of computing, where personal AI transforms the PC from a tool into an intelligent partner. We’re creating a new kind of agentic PC that can understand, reason and act alongside us,” said Jack Huynh, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Computing and Graphics Group at AMD.

Huynh said that Perplexity Portable Computer running on AMD Ryzen AI Max-powered systems, including the Ryzen AI Halo developer platform, allows powerful AI models and agents to operate directly on the PC while working across everyday applications and workflows.

He also highlighted the flexibility of combining local AI processing with frontier-scale reasoning when additional capabilities are needed. According to Huynh, the collaboration reflects AMD’s vision for the Personal AI Era, where PCs become more personal, powerful, open and intelligent.

Local AI Processing With Ryzen AI Max

A key element of the experience is the architecture of AMD Ryzen AI Max processors. These processors combine CPU and GPU performance with a large pool of shared memory, creating a platform capable of handling local AI models alongside conventional PC applications.

This architecture can be particularly useful for AI workloads because models and applications can access a shared pool of memory rather than relying exclusively on conventional system configurations. The approach is designed to provide the computational resources needed for demanding local AI tasks while maintaining the ability to run everyday applications.

Perplexity adds the software layer to that hardware foundation. Portable Computer brings together AI models, agent tools and user controls, providing a practical interface through which users can put the capabilities of an AMD-powered system to work.

The result is an approach that combines local computing with cloud flexibility. Tasks that can be handled efficiently on the PC can run locally, while workloads that require additional scale or advanced reasoning can still make use of cloud resources.

AMD Ryzen AI Halo for Developers

The AMD Ryzen AI Halo developer platform is another important part of the announcement. Designed for developers, creators and AI innovators, Ryzen AI Halo provides a platform for exploring the next generation of agentic AI applications.

Developer-focused systems such as Ryzen AI Halo can help software creators experiment with local AI models, agentic workflows and applications that take advantage of on-device processing. By making AI compute available closer to the user, developers can explore experiences that may benefit from local responsiveness, flexibility and control.

The availability of Portable Computer on Ryzen AI Halo systems also illustrates how hardware and software are increasingly converging around agentic computing. Instead of treating AI as a separate cloud service, the PC itself becomes part of the AI workflow.

For developers, this creates opportunities to explore applications in which AI agents can interact with software and perform recurring tasks while leveraging the computing resources available on the local system.

A New Model for Personal Computing

The collaboration between AMD and Perplexity reflects a broader shift in the PC industry toward personal AI. Traditional PCs have primarily served as platforms for running applications under direct user control. Agentic computing introduces a different model in which AI systems can understand objectives, reason through tasks and take actions on behalf of users.

Local processing can play an important role in this transition. Running AI workloads directly on the PC can offer greater flexibility over how computing resources are used, while reducing the need to send every task to remote infrastructure.

At the same time, local and cloud computing do not have to be competing approaches. The combination of both can allow a system to select the most appropriate environment for a particular workload.

AMD and Perplexity are positioning their collaboration around precisely this model. Ryzen AI Max provides the underlying compute capabilities, while Portable Computer provides the agentic software experience. Together, they enable users to access local AI workflows while retaining the option of cloud-based processing when necessary.

Perplexity

Expanding the Agentic AI Ecosystem

AMD’s latest collaboration with Perplexity comes as the company continues to broaden its AI portfolio across PCs, data centers and other computing platforms. AMD describes its strategy as delivering AI compute across a broad range of systems and turning that compute into practical applications.

The company’s AI portfolio includes CPUs, GPUs, networking technologies and software designed to support AI workloads across different environments. Its continued investment in AI PCs and agentic computing reflects the growing importance of AI as a core component of personal computing.

The introduction of Portable Computer on AMD Ryzen AI Max-powered Windows PCs adds another layer to that ecosystem by connecting local AI hardware with an agent-based software experience.

For users, the development points toward PCs that can do more than simply host applications. As AI models and agents become more capable, the computer can increasingly serve as an intelligent platform that helps users automate workflows, process information and interact with software.

For developers, platforms such as AMD Ryzen AI Halo provide an environment for exploring what these experiences could look like as agentic AI evolves.

The partnership ultimately highlights a broader transformation in computing: AI is moving from being a feature within individual applications to becoming a fundamental part of how computers operate. With AMD Ryzen AI Max Series processors providing local compute and Perplexity Portable Computer bringing AI agents and workflows to Windows PCs, users and developers now have another way to explore the emerging Personal AI Era.
